(28 June 10) Extending a demonstration setup by the Exploratorium, I was able to compute the speed of sound in air. This is an experiment which took no unusual equipment and very little special knowledge. Anyone could do this at home, (assuming they can hear fog signals from the Golden Gate bridge), here is how I did it.

(21 February 10) A message in a bottle that I cast from a ship has washed ashore on Orchid Island off Taiwan and apparently it has made big news on the little island.
"It is a BIG wonderful, happy news for everyone in the island. Your letter brings Orchid Island good luck and a talk for the next few years - I am sure!!!"

(22 January 08) For several years I have been earning my keep by plying the worlds oceans. On each ocean passage of each ship I have sailed on I have made a point to cast a message in a bottle into the sea, then I wonder: "Who will find this note?", "What language will they speak?"

(20 February 07) In 1801 Thomas Young demonstrated the wave nature of light in what has become known as Young's Double Slit Experiment. Through high school and college I had seen black and white pictures in my text books of grainy lines that were supposed to be the interference pattern cast by light interacting with its self.
